Barbie’s “Ironic” Advertisment

As many have seen, Barbie came out with a new video advertisment that is creating quite the converse. Here is why:

  1. The called the video a “Feminist Barbie Advert”:

How can video have the adjective “feminist”  when in the video advert they’re clearly using woman inequality to justify buying a barbie. The advertisement doesn’t focus on any real social issues relating to woman inequality and if the marketing team behind the ad actually respected the concept of “Feminism” they probably wouldn’t have created this ad.

  2. Why do girls need barbies to imagine what she can become in her future?

2015 Barbie Advert

As you can see in the imagine it says “with barbies girls can imagine themselves as anything” . So, unfortunatly for women only we need barbies to picture ourselves in the future or anything else in life. They’re discreetly creating consumerism and perception that women are going to be great woman if they continue to consume barbies..

3.They’re targeting young girls to help them develop consumerism behavior:

Back in the 90s image was prime for women. The most popular women were those who fit the current beauty standards.  Now in 2015, career orienated women and successful women are considered more attractive than ever so ofcourse barbie will try to relate their product to these women when in reality there is no connection. Barbie has destroyed the self-esteem of little girls for generations with they’re disgusting advertisements and their creations or the unrealtic image of the perfect “model material” girls. Check out these older and even recent Barbie commericals and wonder where they got their new “feminist” idea from:

In advertisement, always stay true to your brand. When you’re brand fails society don’t pretend it does society some justice. As for me, I am a social entrepreneur and it saddens me to see that companies like Barbie are manipulating people who do not fully understand what consumerism is. Instead of buying your kids products like these just take them to the park or take a few hours out of your day to help them build a magnificent hobby.
